Frequently Asked Questions

How does the program work? – Each week a “Crime of the Week” is highlighted in local newspapers, on the local radio stations, and this web site. People with information about the crime of the week (or any other major crime), wanted fugitives, or narcotics violations are asked to call Crime Stoppers toll free (1-800-748-6422) and provide the information.

If I report a crime, will I remain anonymous? – During the initial call, callers are given a tip number which is unique to them. You never have to give your name or your phone number. You remain anonymous throughout the entire process.

The information is passed on to the appropriate law enforcement agency and investigated. If the tip leads to an arrest or the filing of charges, the tipster is eligible for a reward up to $1,000.

Are there rewards? – Once the Board of Directors authorizes a reward, the tipster will be requested (via their tip number) to call Crime Stoppers.

What does Crime Stoppers cost? – Crime Stoppers of Lewis County is a tax exempt, nonprofit corporation and all donations are tax deductible. None of your tax dollars are being used. Crime Stoppers of Lewis County is funded entirely from individual citizens, corporations, service clubs and business donations. If you would like to help with a contribution it would be greatly appreciated.
